SUMMER EXODUS - CARNARVON.

Western Mail, Perth, Saturday 1 January, 1910.

CARNARVON NOTES.
The summer exodus from Carnarvon
concluded with the sailing of the steamer
Koombana on Wednesday night. Including
that vessel's passengers, 150 persons have
sailed from here for Fremantle during December.
The Koombana also took away 1,000 sheep.

This extract highlights the climatology of the Nor'west. Carnarvon can reach a maximum of 45 degrees centigrade in December. Although not cool, Fremantle can reach a maximum of 29 degrees centigrade during the same month, which is significantly less than the Nor'west. Examples of maximum temperatures for December:

Wyndham          45 degrees
Derby                37 degrees
Broome             34 degrees
Port Hedland     37 degrees

No wonder Koombana was fitted throughout with electric fans. Escaping the heat of summer in the Nor'west to the cooler and more sophisticated Fremantle, provided brisk December trade for the steamers operating along the coast.

Note that Koombana could accommodate 1000 sheep on her livestock deck - directly below luxurious cabins.
