S.S. KOOMBANA OVERDUE.
FREMANTLE, Wednesday.
This afternoon the collector of Customs
received a telegram from Sharks Bay,
stating that the steamer Koombana,
which left Canarvon on Tuesday night,
was overdue, and was supposed to have
gone aground at the northern end of the
Bar Flats, about twelve miles from Denham.
The agents' opinion is that Captain Rees is
standing off, owing to the lowness of the tide.
It was all about the tides. Access to ports such as this on a high tide must have played havoc with schedules. Any delays could have thrown out the possibility of gaining access to Denham, among others, notably Broome. I wonder if this played a role when Koombana departed Port Hedland for the last time, March, 1912. We'll get there in due course...
Remarkable if Captain Rees went aground, again, at Bar Flats. What excuse this time???
