The Advertiser, Adelaide, Thursday 10 December, 1908.
The Koombana, a passenger steamer,
built to the order of the Adelaide Steamship
Company was launched at Glasgow by Messrs.
Alexander Stephens & Sons, one of the largest
shipbuilding firms in Scotland. She has a length of
340 ft., a breadth of
47 ft., with a depth of
23 ft.,
These press reports could not get draft and depth figures right!
and will carry 250 passengers. She has
triple expansion engines, and has a register
of 3,000 tons. The Koombana will trade
in Western Australia, between Fremantle
and the northern ports, and will leave
the Clyde early in 1909.
The Mercury, Saturday 30 March, 1912.
'she was built to attain a speed of
14 1/2 knots.'
Wrecksite.eu quotes her speed as 12 1/2 knots. But given that Yongala, similar in so many respects, was built for 14 - 15 knots, I am inclined to believe this extract.
Indeed 13.5 knots was operating speed and 14.5 knots could be achieved under ideal circumstances.
The Advertiser, Adelaide, Wednesday 10 April, 1912
'Her engines were triple expansion,
but not duplicate, and had all the
latest auxiliary gear.'
